Blow-in insulation
What is Blow-in Insulation?
Blow-in insulation, usually made from fibreglass or cellulose, can be used in places where other insulation methods are impractical or unfeasible. Appropriate for both existing and new construction, blow-in insulation is suitable for use in exterior walls or the attic. When blown in, the insulation particles effectively fill in the space, even areas that are small or hard to reach.
Most commonly available as loose-fill fibreglass or cellulose, or cellulose that has been stabilized or manufactured as a wall-cavity spray, blow-in insulation is installed using a blowing machine. Loose-fill is dry and appropriate for both attics and wall. Stabilized and wall-cavity spray cellulose have added moisture to adhere to vertical surfaces.
Blow-in insulation has many advantages. Unlike rolled-in batt insulation, the R-value is adjustable, depending on the quantity used. Installation can be done through small holes in finished walls, filling in between studs and around wiring, without the need to remove the drywall or siding. Attic spaces can be evenly blanketed, even in unreachable areas. Properly installed, blow-in insulation provides a highly effective barrier between the inside and outdoor temperatures, allowing for energy efficient heating and cooling of the home.
Whether installed by the homeowner or a professional, blow-in insulation is a good option for ensuring the energy efficiency and comfort of any home.
