Reflective insulation

What is Reflective Insulation?

Reflective Insulation is a metallic foil, most often aluminium, which resists all three types of heat transfer. Unlike most other insulation types, which only work well to prevent heat transfer by conduction and convection, it is also an excellent radiant barrier, which means it can actually block radiant heat transfer. It is often used in conjunction with other types of insulation.

Importance of Reflective Insulation

Reflective insulation performs well in hot, sunny climates because of its ability to repel and reflect heat away from the building. However, its ability to resist all types of heat transfer makes it equally useful in cooler climates. As mentioned before, it is often used in conjunction with other types of insulation. The reason for this is that it helps to keep insulation dry, preventing water vapor from accumulating inside. Simply put, reflective insulation enhances the properties of the insulation paired with it. Besides performing as a water vapor retardant, reflective insulation can also act as a wind barrier, obstructing drafts from entering into the building.

Cost Savings from Reflective Insulation

In hot, bright climates, reflective insulation repels heat, thus reducing the overall energy that would have been needed to cool the building. In cooler climates, it prevents heat loss, reducing the amount of energy that would have been used to heat the building. In any environment, reflective insulation can work in union with another insulation type to be more cost effective and to keep insulation dry, preventing expensive water damage.
